[reuter’s special telegrams to press AGENCY.] AUSTRALIAN. The Political Situation. Melbourne, January 28. The Mayor has convened a public meeting in obedience to the wishes of a large number of ratepayers to consider the political situation. Bishop Thornton, at Ballarat, exhorted the clergy at* the diocese to avoid political allusions in their sermons. INTERPROVINOIAL. [pee press agency.] Cable Communication. The Cricket Match. Wellington, January 29. The Superintendent of> the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company has telegraphed that the Singapore and Batavia cable worked badly for some days prior to the total interruption. The repairing ship Edinburgh was on her way from Rangoon to Singapore, but communication will probably bo restored about in about a week. Steamers arrive at Batavia from Sincapore on the 3rd, 6th, 17bh, and 20th of February, but many local steamers are sure to arrive between these days. The Wellington team completed their second innings, scoring only a few runs. The Australians in their second innings got ten runs with the loss of one wicket, which won the match. They are now playing a singleinnings match ; the Wellington men are at the wicket. The weather is fine, but the attendance meagre at present. Dunedin, January 29. Nearly a thousand persons attended the meeting for the election of the school committee last night. The meeting was very stormy, and tlio mode of election gave general dissatisfaction, and was severely criticised. The Catholics held aloof. Resolutions were passed recommending the committee to endeavor to have the defects of the Act remedied. Mr J. P. Armstrong is likely to become a candidate for the election of Mount Ida in the General Assembly if Mr De Latour carries out his expressed intention of resigning his seat. Telephones are being used here by one or two business people to connect their warehouse with tho office.
