The opening of the extension of the Napier line to Kopua to-day was made the occasion of a general holiday in Napier. All the Bants and places of business were closed. At the Wesleyan Conference to-day it was stated that the total amount expended during the year in the erection of new Wesleyan churches was £6678; parsonages, £2866; schools, £I2BO. Fourteen new sites for church purposes have been procured. It is proposed to erect eight new churches as soon as possible. The registrar reports the value of connexional church property to be £113,984. The income for the supernumerary and ministers' widows' fund for the year was £730; the contingent fund, £363. The ship Mataura sailed for London to-day. Her cargo, wool, tallow, and sundries, is valued at £84,369. The last Government " Gazette " contains a notification that the Hon. John Ballance has been appointed Minister to have charge of the Administration of the Naval Training Schools Act.

Inver cargill—revenue, £285 ; expenditure, £239 The results of the Westport and Wanganui lines are considered abnormal, neither line yet doing its proper traffic, and in the following lines the revenue from wharves is not included:—Auckland, Kaipara, Foxton, New Plymouth, Greymouth, Picton, Westport. Mr Travers, to-day, sent in his resignation to the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Invebcaegiii, January 25. The Hon. Mr L irnach returned to Invercargill this afternoon, and received several deputations on local matters. A Muff Cricket Match was played this afternoon in aid of the funds of the newly established Benevolent Institution. Messrs Larnach, Carruthers, Blair, Conyers, and a number of the leading men of Invercargill, took part in the game, which was most amusing. There were about 400 people present. The banquet was postponed till this evening.
