INTERPROVINCIAL. [PEE PEESB AGENCY,] Auckland, January 17. Dr. Somerville held a special prayermeeting for ladies to-day, from which gentlemen were excluded. Only two civil cases are set down for hearing in the Supreme Court. Sir George Grey has been elected Patron of the Working Men’s Club, and Mr Brett, the Mayor, as president. In the ease of Henry Solomon Meares, charged with fraudulent bankruptcy, the jury were locked up all night, but failed to agree, and were discharged this morning. The ease will be tried again in April. Another charge of concealment of assets is being proceeded with. Mr Walters takes his horses South about Tuesday, the sth proximo. It is not known whether Hippocampus will start for the Wellington races. The Auckland and Riverhead Railway is expected to be opened in two months. The rainfall last night was about two inches. Wellington, January 17. It is understood that Sir George Grey will visit Westport and other places on the west coast of the South Island some time next month, but tin; exact date is not yeC fixed. A Government Gazette issued to-day notifies that the following will be the rates of pay and allowances of officers of the armed constabulary : —lnspector and first-class superintendent, £500; inspector and secondclass superintendent, £ 100 ; inspectors, £300; sub-inspectors, £250 ; sergeants, £250. G. S. Whitmore is gazetted Commissioner of Armed Constabulary while he remains member of the Executive Council, without being entitled to any salary or any emolument whatever. Another notification;contains the appointment of all armed constabulary officers as first and second class inspectors, sub-inspectors, and sergeants.

The terras and conditions under which rewards will be paid for the discovery of new goldfields, in pursuance of a resolution of the House on the 4th of October last, are published in the “ Gazette.” The total Customs revenue for 1877 was £1,213,479; for the previous year £1,216,791. The “Star” to-night says it has been favored with the perusal of a letter received by a resident of Dunedin from a passenger who went home by the ship Loch Ryan, which left Melbourne during the latter part of last year, in which letter it is stated that Sullivan, the murderer, was a second cabin passenger in that vessel. Sullivan was discovered a month after the Loch Ryan left Melbourne. EUROPEAN TELEGRAMS. The following are additional telegrams in the Melbourne “Argus Baker Pasha, in covering the Turkish retreat on Tuesday, lost 000 men. The Russians’ neglect to provide sledges cripples their advance, and it is doubtful if they can reach Adrianople before May. Ghazi Mukhtar Pasha, the commander of the Turkish forces in Asia, has arrived at Constantinople. The Turkish Parliament has adopted amendments on the address requiring explanations of the military policy of the Government. A war vote of £'5,000,000 is demanded.
