SERIOUS FIRE AT AUCKLAND.

[By Telegraph.! Auckland, January 16. A disastrous lire occurred in Newton this morning at half-past two o’clock. The fire originated in the house of one Alpine, a shoemaker, who rescued his family with difficulty, The fire rapidly extended to the Rising Sun Hotel adjoining, and to other buildings. Several houses on the opposite side of the street were much damaged, a high wind driving the lire. Its origin is unknown. The following is the property destroyed:—Rising Sun Hotel, totally, insured for £IOO in the South British, £250 in the Norwich Union ; furniture and stock, £3OO, in the New Zealand. Two cottages behind, the greater portion of the furniture in which was saved. The building was insured for £l5O in the Norwich Union. Prime’s grocery store damaged ; estimated at £700 ; building insured in the South British for £llsO. Streeter’s pork butchery, nothing sayed; insured in the Norwich L'nion for £IOO, and National for £IOO ; stock uninsured, valued at £2OO. Crawford’s, .chemist, damage not great; stock insured for £125 in the South British ; furniture for £IOO in the Norwich Union; building for £4OO in the Royal. McAlpiue’s, shoemaker’s shop, totally destroyed; nothing saved ; house, furniture, and machinery 'insured in the National for £2OO. Kemble’s bakery, furniture and stock not greatly damaged ; £lO will probably cover the loss. Mann’s dwelling house totally destroyed ; insured in the Imperial for £2OO. Stringfellow’s toyshop ; insurance unknown. South side of the street—Frouds, tailor, slightly damaged ; insured in the South for £250. Alexander Green, grocer, roof slightly damaged. Johnston’s bakery and grocery, slightly damaged ; extent about £25 ; msured in the New Zealand for £7O. Haye’s store and post-office, greatly damaged; insured in the South British for £400 ; stock, £2OO, in the Union; estimated damage to building, £3OO. Greatlawe’s toy' and fancy shop greiitly damaged; stock and furniture greatly destroyed ; loss fully £IOO • house insured for £2OO in the Standard ; damage to building, £l5O. Coulb'ourhe’s dwelling-house ; building damaged to extend of £J00"; insured in the Standard for '£2oo. of the fire brigade was returning from (the fire the vehicle capsized. One, Goakin, fell on hi> head, sustaincd’concussion of the brain, and was removed to the hospital. It is feared that his in juries arc fatal. The total losses at the fire wore—South British, £1000; New Zealand, £350; Imperial, £200; Union, £200; Standard, £BO ; Roval, £7 10s.
