Tom Finn was scratched. Don refused the first hurdle and gave up; Whitefoot retired at second place up hill. The order was Don Juan, Butcher Boy, and Perfume, all three within twenty yards of each other. Down the hill and past the stand Butcher Boy and Don Juan ran side by side, Perfume about four lengths in the rear. Rising the hill the second time Perfume began to go up. At Elleralie House she raced up to Butcher Boy, who was leading, but at the next jump her chance of success was suddenly cast down by both. Perfume and the Boy coming a cropper. It now looked as if the race was certainly for Don Juan, and his name was in everybody’s mouth, but another cry arose, “Tommy’s up,” “Perfume’s up,” and then the mare appeared over the crest of the hill, about 100 yards behind Don Juan. “ Will she catch him ?” Impossible it seemed. “Perfume,” “ Perfume,” was screamed on all sides as the mare was seen coming up hand over fist down hill. Then a splendid race, and excitement on the stand tremendous. At the last jump one quarter of a mile from home, only twenty yards intervened between her and Don Juan, his jockey riding him hard. Shouts and cheers increased to thunder as Perfume, about 300 yards from home, sailed by her gallant opponent, and the game mare came at the last jump strong as a lion, taking it splendidly, and the grandest steeplechase ever seen in Auckland was won by five lengths.
