NEW YEAR’S DAY SPORTS.

LYTTELTON,

Committee: Messrs J. Sowden (chairman), T. Thornley, R. Cullen, W. D’Authrenu, R. Anderson, McQuilkin, J. Duff, J, Fletcher. Judges; Messrs Sowden and Thornley. Starter : Mr Cullen. Treasurer : Mr J. Duff. Hon. Sec. : Mr J. Fletcher.

These sports, which were held in London street on New Year’s Day, seemed to divide the attractions of the holiday with the regatta going on in the harbour, as from an early hour the street was crowded with visitors, and, after 1 p.m., it took the committee all their time, aided al; intervals by the police, to keep a clear course for the competitors. An excellent programme had been provided, and indeed the whole of the arrangements reflected the greatest credit on the committee, each member of whom worked hard, and succeeded in completing the programme without a single hitch or lull taking place. Canterbury and Oxford streets formed the ends of the course, and from the Empire Hotel to Hunter’s, and the Albion to the Railway Hotel lines of flags were suspended over the street, presenting a very gay appearance, -which was increased by the Christmas greenery showing in front of the shops at intervals. As can easily be imagined, the rood was not “turfy” travelling, and those runners who had spikes in their boots had very much the worst of it on the stones. The greatest good humour prevailed throughout, but the committee had considerable difficulty at times in keeping the track clear. Mr J. Duff acted as entries clerk, and kindly allowed his shop to be used as an office for the convenience of those desiring to enter for the various events, and also for winners receiving their prizes. There was no delay whatever in settling the prizes, as after each event an order was given or the money paid as stipulated on the programme. From Oxford street to the other end of the line one feeling of thorough enjoyment seemed to pervade all. At very short intervals, by stepping inside, refreshments were obtainable in the shape of a sandwich and cup of tea, fruit, and pastry, but the absence of small change was very noticeable.
