ODDFELLOWS' FETE.

The Loyal Avon Lodge, 1.0.0. F., held their first fete at Taylor's G-ardens, in aid of their Widow and Orphan Fund. The committee to whom the management of the affair was entrusted, more particularly Messrs Lezard, Price, and H. D. Manning, worked most energetically, and the result of their labours was a complete success. The visitors commenced to gather at the gardens shortly after eleven o'clock, at which time it was announced that the sports would begin. A unicycle circus, under the able management of Messrs Lezard and Manning, had been established on the lawn in front of the house, and the juveniles, as well as children of larger growth, seemed most thoroughly to enjoy themselves thereat. Others more romantically inclined, wandered off into the maze, where, after a great deal of trouble, the secret of the many devious walks was penetrated. For those who in anticipation of the evening desired to disport themselves in the mazy dance, there was the large room, which had been nicely decorated, and plenty of music. On the lawn the sports were carried on with great vigour. There were races for children, old men, and young ladies for prizes of all kinds. Every event was keenly contested, and in the case of the children, each competitor whether successful or not, received a quantity of toys. Then there were swimming races at the baths, in which one or two of the competitors were left hopelessly in rear at a very early period. Altogether a most enjoyable day was spent by all present. Mr Ringwood catered, and his ample providing was done justice to and highly appreciated. In the evening a ball took place, which was largely attended. The room was prettily decorated with flowers and evergreens, and at one end was the emblem of the lodge, and the words " Loyal Avon Lodge, 1.0.0. F." in evergreens. Mr Schwartz's band was in attendance, and to its inspiring strains those present began the year 1878 in a right merry manner. Altogether the fete was a thorough success despite the great attractions elsewhere.
