MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, December 21. [Before Q-, L. Lee, Esq., and Dr. Deamer, Justices of the Peace.] Drunkenness.— Hugh Travers, for drunkenness and exposure, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor. John Bradley was fined 20s, or 48 hours’ imprisonment. Three others were fined 5s each. Protection of Earnings. —The application of Harriet Rity for protection of her earnings, made on account of her husband’s cruelty, was further adjourned till next day. Cattle Trespasses. —Before their Worships proceeded to deal with the cases of cattle trespass, Inspector Hickson suggested that an extra fine should be inflicted on those persons against whom previous convictions were on record. The Bench thought the suggestion a valuable one, but preferred to make no alteration, in the absence of Mr Mellish, who had a rule of his own, and to whom the inspector had better mention the matter. The cases were then called. A. Walker was fined ss; Q-. R. Drew, 5s ; Matthew Little, 5s ; W. A. Merriman, 5s ; Thomas Meyers, 5s ; and Robert Beatty, ss. Cab Regulations. —Ruben Butcher was fined 10s for not being in attendance on his licensed vehicle; and Daniel Howard and Alfred Coker, for plying without having a table of fares displayed in their vehicles, were fined 10s each.
