BOARD OF EDUCATION.

* This Board held a meeting at the Normal School, at 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Present —Mr John Inglis (chairman), and Messrs Montgomery, Webb, J. N. Tosswill, Duncan, and the Hon. E. Stafford. APPOINTMENTS, &C. The secretary, Rev. Mr Habens, read and laid on the table a list of appointments made since last meeting and expenditure authorised, the Board approving the same. EDUCATION ACT. A letter enclosing a copy of the new Education Act was laid on the table as having been received from the Colonial Secretary ; also, a copy of the Education Reserves Act. Some conversation took place on the latter with regard to its bearings on the reserves formerly under the jurisdiction of the Board. It was decided to take the solicitor’s opinion as to the Board’s position with regard to the reserves. OBJECTION TO SITE POE SCHOOL. The Chairman of the Irwell School Committee appeared before the Board in reference to the site of the Irwell school. A number of the residents had objected, in writing, to the site selected, but the gentleman who acted as a deputation stated that several of the persons signing did not reside within the district. He supported the retention of the site selected by the committee. The Board resolved that Gardiner’s site should be retained. APPLICATIONS POE ASSISTANCE. Several applications for monetary assistance were ordered to be held over until the Board became better off in the matter of funds. PAEEOEA. Correspondence having been read from the master of Pareora school, it was resolved that the master should be required to adhere to the Government scale of payment. BELL POE THE NORMAL SCHOOL. The Chairman stated that Mr J. Anderson had offered a new bell for the Normal school at a cost of £ls, Mr Anderson to take the old bell at a cost. The new bell would cost in all, erection included, about £2O, Its weight was a little over a cwt. The matter was referred to the chairman and Mr Montgomery. WEST ONPOED. Friday, the 28th instant, was fixed as the day on which two new members should be nominated for the school committee of West Oxford, the Monday following to be polling day. WAINHI. The nomination of new members for the Wainui school committee was fixed tor 28th instant. MOUNT SOMEES. The Chairman stated that the master of Mount Somers school had removed to another district, and the committee recommended the appointment of a mistress on account of the small attendance. Recommendation approved.

KAIAPOI. The Kaiapoi school committee wrote, recommending the Board to sanction the dismissal of Miss Hookham, as serious differences had taken place between her and the head master. Miss Hookham wrote, giving her version of the alleged differences, asking the Board to institute an enquiry, and denying that she had been guilty of wilful insubordination. The action of the school committee was, after due consideration, confirmed by the Board. COUNT DE ZABA. The Count de Zaba, through Mr Adams, applied to know whether the Board would entertain the idea of his lectures on education and history being delivered in connection with the Normal school. Referred to the chairman to make arrangements. SCHOOL PRIZES. Having read a letter from the parent of a child attending Fapanui school, the Board affirmed the principle that children over thirteen should not be excluded from competing for prizes, but that all pupils should be allowed to compete. The Board then went inf o committee, in which a number of details were dealt wifh.
