C.R.C. SENIOR PAIRS.
The final heat of the Senior Pairs for the prize presented for competition by members of the C.R.C. took place yesterday evening. The contending crews were Ollivier and Lean v Lanauze and Paul. It was thought, that the former had much the best of it, and the result proved the correctness of the surmise. The losers pulled a game race, though a losing one, and are to bo congratulated upon the hard struggle they made for the prize. The race throughout was a capitally contested one, both crews doing their level best to win. We append the particulars : Sknior Paie-Oabeb Rack. One mile. FINAL HEAT.
Moa, north bank (Ollivier, stroke ; Lean, bow ; Manning, cox.) Tui, south bank—(J. R. Lanauze, stroke;
B. J. Paul, bow ; Dixon, cox) 2 On the word being given to go the Moa was the first to catch the water, and went off at a hot pace, closely followed by the Tui, both crews pulling a slashing stroke. The Moa got about half a length lead, which she held till near Hordson’s. Here the Tui put on a spurt and got on level terms. A very fine race ensued all up the reach, both being all but neck and neck, and doing their very best. In this order they went until coming to Cowlishaw’s corner, when the Moa drew away and rounded it just by about half a length. Up the reach to the bridge, despite the plucky efforts of the Tui to overhaul her, the Moa increased her lead to a length, and passed through the bridge that distance ahead of her antagonist. Erom this to home the boats kept their positions, the Moa finishing a most gamely contested race a length ahead of the Tui. Messrs Ollivier and Lean are therefore the winners of the prizes.
