RIFLE SHOOTING.

The match between the Commissioned Officers of Volunteers and a like number of civilians, came off on Friday last at the Hillsborough range. Half the number of officers were absent, also one civilian, but one week has been allowed the absentees to complete their firing. The competitors left Radcliffe’s Hotel at 10.30 a.m., proceeding to the range by special omnibus. The wind was rather gusty, but the light was good. The conditions of firing were seven shots at each range, any position, Government rifles, no sighting shots. The following is the score :

Considering that the majority of those firing did so with strange rifles, the scores were very creditable. Sweepstakes for an aggregate and range prizes were arranged with the following result—Mr Pavitt took third range prize at 200 and first at 500, also first aggregate; Captain Warner third at 300 yards; Lieutenant Stnnge second at 300 yards; Mr Appleby third at 400 and 500; Mr Manning second at 400 ; Mr Hesketh second 500 ; Mr Dixon first at 400 and third aggregate ; Mr Innes first at 200 and 300 yards and second aggregate ; Mr Allison second at 200 yards. A sweepstake for three shots at 500 yards resulted in a tie for first prize between Mr Appleby and Mr Hill, ten points each, the latter taking it, Mr Manning securing third prize at nine points. The party on returning to town adjourned to Radcliffe’s Hotel, where several toasts were drunk with bumpers of champagne and musical honors. All then separated highly delighted with the day’s outing. Mr Q-ee catered for the occasion in his usual good style.
