MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, December 10, [Before G. L. Hellish, Esq., R.M/] Deunk and Disorderly.—W. Miller, charged with being drunk, using obscene language, and committing an act of exposure in High street, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labor, W. Hyndham, for being drunk while in charge of a horse, and resisting the arresting constable, was fined 255. A first offender was fined ss, and John Bradley ss. Miscellaneous. —John Ranby, summoned for not being in sufficient attendance upon his horse and vehicle, was fined 10s. John Anderson and H. M. Goodger, summoned for similar offences, were each fined 10s. A case against Charles Sissons was dismissed, as it was shown that ho had left his wheel locked. Daniel Gal lee, summoned for committing a breach of the peace and obstructing the arresting constable, was fined 40s. Thomas Weir and E. Harley were each fined 5s for trespassing on the lino of railway between Opawa and Christchurch. It was shown that defendants had merely walked up on the side of the line, a practice, it was stated, that has obtained for the last ten years. Horses and Cattle at Large.—For allowing horses and cattle to wander at large, the following persons were each fined 5s : Eneas McKendry, John Lee, Robert Walls, J. E. Mather, William Dowling, John Parish, Michael Howard, Archibald Hammill, James Mcßay, T. Prosser, and Thomas Henley. Breach of Scab Act— G. M. R. Green was summoned for being the owner of twentyfive unbranded sheep at the Addington yards, on the 28th of November last. Defendant g leaded ignorance of the law, and said that as e liyed in tfie swamp he had not seen the previpus cases that had been brought before the Bench. Fined Is and costs. Assaults. —Abraham Blagg and John Davis, two young lads, were charged with having assaulted a boy named Frederick Mulfen, on the 30th of November. From the evidence it appeared that the hoy Davis held Mullen while Plagg kicked him. A medical certificate was handed in to show that com : plainant had received some bruises on the hip. It was shown that the defendants, before the assault, knew that complainant was nearly blind and was also afflicted with lameness. A lad named Thomas Waterho use gave evidence for the defendants, which, from its nature, was found impossible to believe one word of it, and his Worship told him so. After lecturing the boys for their cowardly conduct in assaulting a blind boy, his Worship cautioned Plagg not to appear before him again, and fined him 10s ; Davis was fined ssj the costs of tlje caee tp to paid equally by defesdaatt,

Abusive Language. James O’Brien, summoned for using abusive language to Henrj Marks, was fined 20s and costs. Illegal Rescue. —Joseph Dunnach was charged with having illegally rescued a cow from a lad named James Sherrock while he was driving it to the pound. Complainant stated that he had received instructions from the poundkecper at Lincoln to drive all cows to the pound that he found on the road. On 26th November witness saw defendant’s cow on the road feeding, and with nobody in charge of her. He then started to drive her to the pound, and while doing so defendant came from the back of a fence and drove her back, A witness called by defendant stated that he (defendant) was on the road at the time, and not more than ten yards away from the cow when complainant drove her away. Complainant had also threatened that he would be even with defendant for having impounded his father’s pigs. Case dismissed. Damaging a Footpath. —Joshua Gorkin, charged with damaging the channelling of a footpath on the South Belt by driving over it, was fined 10s and costs.
