The superintendent of the Cable Company at Sydney notifies that the steamer Duke oi Edinburgh was repairing the Singapore and Batavia cable when the line steamer left Banjoowangie on the 14fch inst. Port Darwin about the end of the month. The Torres Straits’ mail steamer reaches Townsville (the first telegraph station) on the 29th. INTERPROYINCIAL. [per press agency,] Auckland, November 27. The Auckland Steam Packet Company meet to-morrow to consider the propriety of winding up. The tender of Richard White, £9790, for reclamation between Waterman’s and the new dock, has been accepted by the Harbor Board. At a meeting of the Waste Lands Board a resolution was passed urging the Government to employ Mr Price to complete the purchase of the Te Aroha block, so as to carry out the agreement with Mr Broomhall and open land for settlement. Acceptances for the Auckland Cup and Steeplechase close on Friday. Thirty horses in Auckland are training for the forthcoming races. Several are expected from the South. The Regatta. Club have decided that the Large Yacht race shall be open only to vessels between six and fifteen tons, inclusive. The Amateur Rowing race is restricted to clubs formed three months before the race. The Champion Open Scullers’ race is withdrawn. A dividend has been declared by the National Fire and Marine Insurance Oompany. The total receipts for the Indian Famine Fund amount to £1849 18s 9d. Napier, November 27. The amount collected for the Indian famine fund in the Hawke’s Bay district is £1470. Subscriptions are still coming in. Wellington, November 27. A fire occurred at the Hutt to-day in a boot and shoe store belonging to Mr McKenzie, No one was on the premises. The stock was insured for £2OO in the Liverpool London and Globe office. Palmerston North, November 27. A fire occurred here to-day in J. H. Snelson’s house. The fire was got under before the building was entirely destroyed. The probable loss is £2OOO, covered for £4OO in the South British office, £630 in Victoria, and heavily in the Liverpool and London, though the exact amount is not yet known. Kumara, November 27. A fire occurred at midnight last night at Roulston and Mcllroy’s, grocers. The fire brigade were promptly on the spot and behaved splendidly. There was a good supply of water. The “ Times” office, next door, was for some time in danger, but the fire was confined to the place where it began. The damage done is estimated at £IOOO. The property was insured in the Standard for £BOO, and in the Imperial for £4OO. Greymouth, November 27. The salmon ova are now all hatched. The estimated number of live fish is from forty to forty-five thousand. [from the correspondent of the press.] Timaru, November 27. Although the meeting last night decided against borrowing £40,000 for water works it is believed that when a plebiscitum is taken the scales will turn the other way. The weather is again very hot, but the crops are looking better. People are very sanguine that the breakwater will be commenced at an early date.
