PARLIAMENTARY INCIDENTS.
MEETING- OE AUCKLAND MEMBEES. THE BEOBABLE PEOEOGATTON. [t'KO.M THE CORRESPONDENT OF THE PRESS.] Wellington, November 21. Major Atkinson’s speech last night was well considered and convincing, and as far as it went, crushing Larnach’s figures, hut ho did not touch the policy of appropriating the Land Eund, which may now he considered gone. To-day the Auckland members of the Opposition held a meeting, and determined to support the Government proposals as to Land Eund, but to reduce, if possible, the 20 per cent to be paid locally, and the provision for distributing the surplus, so that generalisation should bo realised to the fullest extent; also to offer no factious opposition, but to oust the Government if an opportunity offers. Several proposals have been made to Mr Stafford to induce him to form a party to turn out the Government, but without success. The Government hope to prorogue by Friday week. Mr Sharp may be considered as having gone over, and the Government majority or otherwise depends on Mr Gisborne, who, to the last moment, is vacillating. To-day is the last private members’ day, and the House will sit very late. Sir Geo. Grey’s speech last night waa worse than ever—quits pitiable in oillinsoa. THE MINISTEY. [fecit a correspondent of the PEESS.] It is reported that Mr Stout, and also Mr J. Evans Brown, are shortly to join the Ministry, the first-mentioned as Attorney-General.
