The prospectus of the Wanganui Steam Navigation Company was issued to-day. The capital is £30,000 in £lO shares. It is proposed to purchase the St. Kilda and Wallabi steamers, and to continue them in the cattle trade; to purchase the Clyde for the Rangitikei and Patea trade, and to obtain a new steamer capable of carrying 150 tons, for the Wellington and Wanganui trade. There is a large provisional directory. An active canvass is going on to bring forward Mr Joe Dransfleld, a former Mayor, to oppose Mr Hutchison, the present Mayor, at the forthcoming election. The “Star,” says “Mr G. Eliott Eliott, late secretary to the Post Office, has given an authoritative denial to the insinuations which appeared under guise of a letter in yesterday’s ‘ Times,’ to the effect that Mr Batkin, Secretary to the Treasury, was brother-in-law to Major Atkinson, and that this accounted for throwing difficulties in the way of the present Ministry.” At a meeting of the Education Board, attended by Professor Shand and Messrs Green and Gillies, the Rector of the High School forwarded an application from the visiting classical teacher for leave of absence. Under existing circumstances, he declined to give any recommendation on the subject. The Board resolved that, in accordance with the usual practice, the Rector should be requested to forward his recommendation, and then the Board would deal with the application.
