The British consul at the latter place has written to the Native Government levying the following fines : —For a collision between the Natives and H.M.S Barracoota, 10,000dol. ; for insult offered to Commodore Hoskins, 10,000dol.; for surrounding and threatening the British consulate upon [two occasions in the month of July with firearms, 10,000dol. ; for various claims made by British subjects, both in the present and past times, 30,000d01., more or less. Pending the decision of Her Britannic Majesty upon the matter, the islands are held as security. There is every prospect of another outbreak at Samoa. The party now in power (Steinberger’s party) are outnumbered by the other faction, and an appeal to arms is expected at no distant date. Wellington, November 7. Arthur Barnsley, telegraph operator, recently arrested at Sydney, and brought back to New Zealand, and who has been several times remanded, was this morning brought before the Resident Magistrate and committed to take his trial at the next Criminal Sitting, for forging a money order for ten pounds. Bail was allowed. Hokitika, November 7. The Christchurch road has been considerably damaged by the late floods. Two land slips occurred in the Otira Gorge, near the mill, and the road between Kelly’s Creek and the Gorge is washed away. Thomas Learmonth, storekeeper, has called a meeting of his creditors. His liabilities are stated at £11,300, and his assets at £12,700. The estate is considered good. Sweeps have been drawn on the Melbourne Cup here, within the past fortnight, for over £7OOO. Dunedin, November 7. On Saturday next the members of the City Council will visit the Silver stream, Water of Leith, and Waitaki, to ascertain by personal inspection the best means of extending the water supply to this city. Mr Hugh McNeil, on behalf of the town belt defence committee, has written to the City Council that, as far as the committee is concerned, they will not offer any objection to the fever hospital being on the town belt till the end of the present year if the Council will give its assurance that it will then be removed. The General Government has consented to carry out the arrangement made by the Provincial Government to Jay out as a garden the reserve around the Dunedin museum. The Finance Committee of the City Council has reported that the cost of supervising public traffic in Dunedin is much greater than the amount of fees received.
