She is now being refitted. INTERPROYINCIAL. Insurances on the Avalanche. Wellington, November 6. The Mayor has to-day remitted to the Lord Mayor of London £I4OO, by telegram, for the Indian Famine Relief Fund. The insurances on the ship Avalanche are stated to be —New Zealand, £7344; South British, £7502 ; National, £3000; Standard, £7OO. The Agent-General informs the Government of the sailing of the Hurunni from Plymouth on 16th September, for Taranaki and Wellington. She will call first at Taranaki. Dunedin, November 6. The following telegram from Mr George McLean to the acting manager of the Union Steamship Company, is published in this night’s “ Star” : —“ Manders never asked for, nor did I ever hint at, any offer of appointment directly or indirectly, and I certainly would not in any way make use of my position in the Union Company for any political purpose. This is only one of the untruthful statements which have appeared in the ‘ Otago Daily Times’ concerning this gentleman and others, because they declined to barter their independence.” Several influential gentlemen have taken a large number of shares in the “ Morning Herald” Company. Definite arrangements have been made for the publication of that paper at an early date.
