The following telegram from Mr George McLean to the acting manager of the Union Steamship Company, is published in this night’s “ Star” : —“ Manders never asked for, nor did I ever hint at, any offer of appointment directly or indirectly, and I certainly would not in any way make use of my position in the Union Company for any political purpose. This is only one of the untruthful statements which have appeared in the ‘ Otago Daily Times’ concerning this gentleman and others, because they declined to barter their independence.” Several influential gentlemen have taken a large number of shares in the “ Morning Herald” Company. Definite arrangements have been made for the publication of that paper at an early date.
