YESTERDAY'S TELEGRAMS

[r-KR PBESS AGENCY.] INTERPROVINCIAL. Shipping Disasters. Loss of the Clan Alpine. Mysterious Suicide. Wellington, October 27. Captain Mackay, of the schooner Herald, reports having left Lyttelton at the same time as the Clan Alpine, which was laden with produce, principally potatoes, for the West Coast. On Wednesday morning about 4.15 the Herald was about twelve miles to the leeward of the Clan Alpine and six miles from Stoneyhurst, when a sudden squall came up from the south-east. The Clan Alpine was under gall'-topsail and main topmast staysail. The Herald was under single reefs. The glass was very 10w—29 - 50. After the squall, the Clan Alpine could not be seen. The Herald was too much to the leeward to get up to the spot, but she waited about an hour, and could see nothing. It is supposed that there were four men on board. Hokitika, October 27. Mr Peter Purcell, member of the Grey County Council, committed suicide by hanging himself in his store this morning. J?o cause is known. He was universally respected. Dunedin, October 27. The chargo of a breach of the Factory Act preferred against Messrs Brown, Ewing and Co. proved to be of a trivial character. Six girls out of a staff of seventy had been kept beyond the prescribed hours to finish an order for mourning. The Bench inflicted a fine of Is and costs.
