A vessel which has arrived at Cooktown from Papua reports a great gold discovery on the north-west coast. She has specimens on board. INTERPROVINCIAL. Fire at Nelson. The Dunedin Mayoralty. Nelson, October 25. By a fire which occurred this afternoon the stables and outbuildings of Harley's Brewery were destroyed. The loss, including machinery, is estimated at £6OO. There was insurance on the buildings in the South British Office for £l5O. The stock was uninsured. Dttnedin, October 25. A requisition is in course of signature in the Roslyn district, calling upon Mr A. J. Burns, M.H.R., to at once support the present Q-overnment, or resign his position. The Mayor, Mr R. 11. Leary, to-day resigned because the officials of the Council intimated'to him that it was not his right to interfere with them in departmental work unless ordered by the Council. He took an opposite view of the matter, and as th© Council did not support him in it he resigned. The resignation fine of £SO was remitted. The Resident Magistrate to-day decided that the Education Board is liable to be rated for property held by it unless specially exempted by statute.
