The Wanaka was signalled, but was still outside the Heads at 1 p.iu. to-day. The barque signalled last night proved to be the George Noble, after all. She is from the Mauritius, with a cargo of sugar for Messrs Dalgety, Nichols, and Co. Three barques from the North were signalled this morning, and their numbers were made before our express left port. They proved to be the Pet, Falcon, and Adelphoi, from Newcastle, from which port no less than nine vessels a re due. THE LOSS OF THE AVALANCHE. Some hopes were entertained by the many friends of the late Captain Williams that he might not Lave been iu command of the ill-fated Avalanche at the time of her loss ; hut, unfortunately, letters by the Sau Francisco mail appear to render it certain that he was in command, one letter having been received from himself announcing that he was on the point of departure, the Avalanche being a full ship. The Wellington “Post ” hears that Captain Grant’s sou was not on board, having been transferred to the Halcioue just before the Avalanche sailed. It appears that Mr Neil Pearce was a midshipman on board the doomed vessel, having won the reluctant consent of his parents to his embracing a nautical career, of which he had become enthusiastically enamoured during his homeward trip from Wellington. He therefore was making his first voyage when his bright and promising career was cut short by this most lamentable disaster.
