Wellington, October 19. An influential meeting was held last night rr. the Indian Famine, His Excellency occupied the chair. A committee was appointed I o obtain subscriptions for transmission to the Mansion House fund. The Governor headed the list in the room with twenty-five pounds. Over two hundred pounds wore subscribed in the room. Pearce, living at Oroua, was fined, by the local Eench, forty pounds for sly grog selling Dunedin, October 10. The Harbor Hoard has contracted with a Dunedin firm for a locomotive to cost £9OO. It is stated that there is every prospect of a satisfactory understanding being arrived at between the Harbor Hoard and Mr Proudfoot in regard to the matters in dispute. Meetings are being held in the suburban districts for the purpose of raising money for the relief of those suffering from famine in India. An artesian well, 75ft. deep, has been sunk at South Dunedin. The water is soon expected (o bo reached. “Fairplay” in this morning’s “Times” says that eight jurors were for acquitting George Proudfoot, and four only for conviction. The annual torchlight procession of the Dunedin fire brigade was celebrated last night with considerable success.
