Wellington, October 19. An influential meeting was held last night rr. the Indian Famine, His Excellency occupied the chair. Meetings are being held in the suburban districts for the purpose of raising money for the relief of those suffering from famine in India. An artesian well, 75ft. deep, has been sunk at South Dunedin. The water is soon expected (o bo reached. “Fairplay” in this morning’s “Times” says that eight jurors were for acquitting George Proudfoot, and four only for conviction. The annual torchlight procession of the Dunedin fire brigade was celebrated last night with considerable success.
