The House met at 2 30 p.m. In reply to Mr Joyce, Mr MACANDREW paid Centre Island, Foveaux Straits, was included in the first purchaso made from the Natives by Mr Mantell. needham's case. Replying to Mr Grisborne's, Mr Sheehan said that, while disapproving of the magistrate's conduct in Needham's case, the Government did not intend to take any further steps against Needham. OTAGO CENTRAL RAILWAY. lii reply to Mr Pyke, Mr Larnacii said no time would be lost in making surveys and taking steps to give effect to the will of the House with regard to the Otago main central railway. dr. Campbell's case. In reply to Mr Stevens, Sir G. Grey said a Royal Commission would be appointed to inquire into the dispute about Dr Campbell and the Christchurch Hospital staff. Meantime Dr Powell would act as resident doctor, Dr Prina would take charge of the surgical eases, and Dr Parkerson would act as consulting physician. NEW BILLS. Riverton Harbor Board Land Bill (Hodgkinson); Riverton Grammar School Bill (Hodgkinson) ; Roxburgh Reserve Amendment Bill (Bastings) ; Patea Harbor Board Bill (Atkinson) ; Town Havelock Commonage Bill (EL Brown) ; Strath Taieri and Clyde Railway Bill (Pyke) ; Southland Boys and Girls' High Schools' Bill (Lumsden.) OTHER BILLS. The Public Health Act Amendment Bill was read a second time. The Otago Roads Ordinance Amendment Bill was passed through Committee. A long discussion took place in Committee on the Public Reserves Bill. A new clause proposed by Mr Stout, forbidding the sale of all intoxicating liquors on all education reserves, racecourses, or recreation and other reserves, was lost, on division, by 34 to 24 ; Bill amendments. The Cross Cheques Bill was withdrawn. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. Tuesday, October 16. All the afternoon was taken up discussing whether or not the Council should proceed with the ordinary business under the temporary leadership* of Colonel Whitmore, doing only private business, to the exclusion of anything which might involve the poliey of the incoming Government, or whether, on the motion of Colonel Brett, the Council should adjourn from day to day until a Minister was appointed. After a discussion lasting oyer an hour, Colonel Brett's motion was carried on the voices, and the Council adjourned till the usual hour to-morrow.
