Tenders for the balance of the 1 per cent, inscribed stock have been received. Only one tender was sent in for £97,000, at £92 10s. The minium was £97, and nothing was accepted. Councillor Rigdon ha 3 been elected Mayor of Melbourne for the ensuing year. Judgment lias been pressed for dissolution of marriage in Fisher v Fisher, and the decree dismissed in Macartney v Macartney. A section of the railway to Gippsland has been opened. A great interest is manifested in the case igainst George Proudfoot, who is charged .vith having committed a rape on Isabella Vngns, the case being heard in the Supreme Court, before a special jury. The father, mother, and sister of the prosecutrix deposed that prisoner, who is reputed to have a wife and family, offered to marry Isabella Angus. The Crown prosecutor having, for certain reasons, preferred not to prosecute in this case, Mr Stewart and Mr Denniston are conducting the prosecution. Mr James Smith and Mr Frederick Chapman appear for the prisoner. Wanganui, October 16. The Indian famine committee have resolved to send £2OO direct to Madras at once. It is expected that the total will realise over £3OO. Hokitika, October 16. A miner named Henry Krazlefel 1, working at Humphries Gully, Ahaura, was buried in a tunnel all day. He is supposed to be fatally injured. Geahamstown, October 16. An outrage was committed by the Maoris on Sunday at a settlement on the East Coast, near Matera. Sergeant Russell and Constable Gordon, accompanied by a man named M'Geehan, as guide, proceeded from Ohinemuri to arrest two natives named Wakutu and Te Wohi for horse-stealing. They found the latter, and,"producing the warrant, were proceeding to put the handcuffs on, when they were assaulted by a score of natives, and the prisoner ran away. The constables gave chase and caught the prisoner in a creek, and were again set upon and beaten, and held down in the creek until the prisoner Te Nohi escaped. Several shots were fired to intimidate the natives, but without effect. The constables got away, secured their hordes, and relumed to Ohinernuri beaten and bruised, and minus one revolver and a pair of handcuffs. The "Star" has been urging the public to take up the Indian Famine Relief question, and probably the matter will be taken up again, and more, spiritedly than before. Dr. Kilgour, at the request of the inhabitants, has called a public meeting for this evening, to congratulate Sir George Grey on his accession to office, and to consider the question of increased representation for the Thames. PABLIAMENTABY. Last Night's Proceedings. Wellington, October 16. Last night the following Bills were read a second time :—The Public Reserves Bill, the Ofeago Roads Ordninance Amendment Bill. The following Bills were referred to the Waste Lands Committee after the second reading :—The Volunteer and Others Land Bill, the Kaiapoi Native Reserves Bill, the Public Reserves Vote Bill, the Manawatu Land Orders Bill. A motion of Mr Gisborne's to refer the whole question of the sufficiency of compensation to provincial officers to the Public Petitions Committee to report on, was negatived by 38 to 16. The House adjourned at 10.10 p.m. The newMinistry were gazetted last night.
