At the City Police Court this morning, James Hogg, farmer, was charged with having attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat at Waipori. He was remanded for medical examination. Haggerty found Guilty and Sentenced. Wellington, October 13. The third trial of Haggerty for fire raising took place yesterday before a fresh jury and afresh Judge (the Chief Justice). The jury were locked up from 6 till 9.30 when they were sent for by the Judge. They still disagreed and were again locked up. At midnight the Judge sent for them again, when they agreed on a verdict of guilty, coupled with a recommendation to mercy. It is said some jurymen compromised matters on the condition that there was this recommendation. At ten this morning the Judge sentenced Haggerty to five years penal servitude-, saying it would have been more but for the recommendation of the jury.

London, October 6, A Turkish official despatch reports a great buttle at Grumri, in Asia Minor, with a favorable result to the Turks. A Russian unofficial despatch states that on the Aid instant the Russians captured the entrenchments near Ears, onMukhtar Pasha’s left, repulsing large masses of Turks, and subsequently abandoned them owing to want of water. The Russian loss was eighty-three officers and 3200 men. The Turkish loss was enormous. A Turkish official despatch from Mukhtar Pasha reports a complete victory on the 2nd instant. The Russians attacked the whole line, but were compelled to retire, the Turks pursuing them to Opachi. The Russian loss was 5000. The Turkish loss is unknown. Other accounts say that the battle was indecisive,
A Russian unofficial despatch states that the Turkish left, supporting the garrison at Kars, attacked the Russian right on the 4th hist., but were defeated with great loss. Sulieman Pasha has been appointed com-mander-in-Ohief on the Danube. Mehemet Ali has been recalled. Raouff Pasha is in command on the Balkans, The Russian head-quarters have been removed to Sistova. The Czar has resolved to remain with the army until the war is ended. There is much sickness among the Russians round Plevna. The Turks are not answering the bombardment. Operations at Shipka were stopped by fog [telegram from the agent-general.] Changes in the Russian Staff. Preparations for a Y/inter Campaign London, October 6. There have been great changes in the command of both armies. Kotzebue has been appointed chief of the Russian staff. Todleben is to direct the siege of Plevna. Mehemet Ali has been recalled, Sulieman Pasha succeeding to the chief command, and Raouff Pasha commanding at Shipka. There has been no important battle for the last fortnight, but prolonged and yet undecided fighting has been proceeding before Kars. The Russians are carefully preparing for a winter campaign. Cable Communication. Wellington, October 12. Colonel Glover, Managing Director of the Eastern Australian Cable Company, is on his way out to negociate about duplicate cable communication with Europe. INTERPROYINOIAL. Timaru, October 12, At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon, a motion was carried recommending the Government to erect a new postoffice in the centre of the town. A motion was tabled for the appointment of a marine surveyor for the port of Timaru. Dunedin, October 12. In the Resident Magistrate’s Court, James Duff sued the City Corporation for £SO damages to a horse and cart, through a trench in Prince’s street having been imperfectly filled up. He obtained judgment for £35 and costs. The prospectus of a new penny daily newspaper is being issued. The first number is to appear on November Ist. It is understood that the old “ Times ” directors are largely interested.
