WAITAKI EACE MEENING. Oamaeit, October 4. Magnificent weather, a large attendance, and good racing, were the features ot the first day’s racing of the Waitaki Jockey Club race meeting, held at Duntroon to-day. A special train left Oamaru at 9.45 a.m., crowded with passengers, returning at 8.15 p.m. DUNTHOON Produce Plate, of the value or of 40 sovs. ; weight for ago ; distance, one mile and a quarter. (Handsome silver fiower stand presented by the president of the club, the Hon. Eobert Campbell). Perryman, 3 yrs ... ... ... ••• 1 Eenella, 3 yrs 2 Lenore, 3 yrs . ° Tircanini also started, but bucked his rider (Gourley) off just after starting, A good start was made Eenella led the most of the way. Opposite the saddling paddock Lenore bolted and made Eenella swerve, and before the latter could get into her stride again Eerryman came up, passed her, and being well ridden by Wattle, won by a length, lime 2 mins 41secs. Waitaki County Plate, 40 sovs ; distance, 11 miles; weight tor age. Danebury, 9st dibs'(4lbs over) 1 Xantippe, 6st 61bs 2 Exile, Dst 81bs 3 Glencoe also started, but bolted alter going half a mile. Blue Peter, Hook, and Satirist were scratched. The flag fell to a good start. Xantippe rushed to” the front, and made the pace a cracker for one mile; Danebury then graduallv overhauled her, and, on entering the straight, had her beaten, ultimately win-
ning, hard held, by three lengths, Exile, six lengths away, third. Time, 2min. 55sec. Waitaki Cup Handicap, 150 sots., with a sweep of 2 sots., the sweep go to the second horse. Distance, 2 miles. Danebury, Bst 121 b ... ... ... ... 1 Bide-a-wee, cSst ... ... ... ... 2 Unknown, 7st 121 b 3 Mufti, 6st 81b ... ... ... ... 0 Sir William, 7st 71b 0 Blue Peter, 7st 91b 0 Gamecock, 7st 31b 0 Rob Roy, 7sfc 31b 0 Will-if-I-can was scratched. Betting—Even money on Bide-a-Wee, 2 to 1 agst Danebury, 3 to 1 agst Sir William and Mufti, 4 to 1 agst Gamecock, Unknown, Rob Roy, and Blue Peter. This was a grand race. It was a pretty start. Blue Peter rushed to the front, and made the running for his stable companion Sir William for the first mile at a lively pace, closely followed by Danebury, Bide-a-Wee, Unkuown, and Sir William. Blue Peter then gave way, and“Bide-a-Wee assumed the lead, but half a mile from home Unknown rushed up and collared him. Wattie then took Danebury up, and the three swept round the turn into the straight all together. From thence Danebury drew away, and won with something to spare by two lengths, Bide-a-Wee and Unknown ran a desperate race for second place, the former winning on the post by a neck. Mufti came with a rush at the finish, and secured fourth place. Time, 3 min. 47 secs.
The trotting race of 25 sovs., was won by Mr Sutherland’s Charlie, which received 450 yards start from Mr Swanson’s Tommy, the second horse. Six started, and the time was 9 min. 24 secs.
The Hack Selling race of 30 sovs. was won by Mr Evans’s b m Deception, after a grand set to with ten others.
The tips for to-morrow’s races are as fob lows :
Jockey Club Handicap, Bide-a-Wee or Danebury, if intended. Huedle Race, Banjo. Maiden Plate, Xantippe. Champagne Stakes, Danebury. As the weather promises to be fine, the attendance to-morrow will bo large.
