Philosophical Institute.— The usmil monthly meeting of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury was held last- evening, at the Public Library. There was a large attendance. The chair was occupied by Dr Coward in the absence of the president. Mr A. C. Baines, who was elected a member of the Institute, read a paper “ On the Influence of the Earth’s Rotation on Rivers ” An interesting discussion followed, in which Professors Cook and Hickcrton and the Rev C. Fraser look part. On the motion of Air Fereday, further discussion on this paper was postponed until next meeting. The Rev J. W, Stack read his second paper, entitled “A Sketch of the History of the South Island Natives.” In the discussion which followed, pai't was taken by Professor Dickerton, Mr Fereday, Revs 0. Fraser and Jackson, after which the meeting adjourned,
