NEWS OF THE DAY.
New Insurance Companies.— We have been shown a private telegram from a reliable source, stating that a new Insurance Company is in course of formation in Auckland. We are also credibly informed that a movement is on foot in Dunedin, and preliminary steps have already taken to form a Mutual Company there The promoters of an embryo company here, held ameeting yesterday, and another was to be held to-day.
Lyttelton Water Supply. —The following resolution was passed at the Lyttelton Borough Council meeting yesterday evening —“ That the foreman of works turn on the water from six to eight every morning, when householders can fetch the water they require from stand pipes (for the present free). Tanks can also be filled, the charge being Is per 100 gallons.” The Q-rand Jury. —The Grand Jury concluded their labours yesterday, having disposed of all the bills presented by the Crown Prosecutor. They were discharged without making any presentment. Correction. —In our report of the sale of entire horses at Tattersall’s, by a printer’s error, the price at which Topsman was withdrawn was stated as 24 guineas, instead of 240 guineas. Strike op Workmen in Dunedin.—A telegram has been received here, stating that there is a strike amongst the workmen in the boot factories in Dunedin, owing to a reduction of wages, and counselling the tradesmen here to “ keep away.” Exported Horses. The well-known thoroughbred entire Knottingley went to Auckland in the s.s. Taupo yesterday, and the draught horse Lord Lorn, recently purchased by Mr Lock, of Nelson, was also shipped, and will be Knottingley’s fellowtraveller as far as that city. Accident.— A beam of wood, which was leaning against St. Michael’s new schoolroom, yesterday afternoon fell and struck one of the workmen, John Barbour, on the shoulder, stupifying him. A medical man was sent for, and Barbour was conveyed home. He is not dangerously injured, but it will be some time before he can resume work. The Boating Season. —At a meeting of the committee deputed to make arrangements for the purpose, it was decided to open the season on Saturday, the 13th hist. Those desirous of taking part in the usual procession and scratch races, are requested to send in their names to Mr Cl. It. Barnes, or to Mr L. Ollivier, not later than Saturday, the 6th instant, , Chess Tournament. —Negotiations winch have been progressing for some time past between the Christchurch Chess Club and those of outlying districts to play a chess tournament in the city, have resulted successfully, and on Thursday next matches will be played at Radcliffe’s Hotel, commencing at noon, when members of the Metropolitan Club will engage four players each from the Lyttelton, Southbrjdge, and Leithfield Clubs. The players to represent Christchurch are— Messrs Colborne- Veel, Hookham, Jacobsen, Dr. Mark, L. E. Nathan, Paul, McWilliams, Day, J. Wood, Peez, Newman, Main waring. Emergency men—Messrs Lane, Kingston, Benson, Jones, and Brady. Every preparation has been made for the reception of the visitors, and the representatives wifi, dine together in thb evening at half -past eeren.
St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church. —lt is expected that divine service will be held for the first time in the new St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church on the first Sunday in November. Death at Sea. —The Dunedin “ Star ” reports that Mr Thomas Pearson, a passenger by the Ringarooma from Melbourne to Lvttelton, died aboard that steamer at 9 p.m. on Tuesday last. Deceased was an old Christchurch resident. He had been suffering from phthisis for some time past. The Kujiara Murder. —Inspector Mallard, of the Dunedin police, arrived in Christchurch yesterday, and proceeded to-day to Kumara, for the purpose of contributing such evidence as he may be able to give in regard to the identification of Ryan, charged with the murder of a man named Daniels, whose body was recently found near that place. Inquest. —At the inquest held yesterday at Addington, touching the death of the infant Mary Jane Hales, Dr. Frankish, who had made a post mortem examination, stated that, in his opinion, death had resulted from congestion of the brain. The evidence showed that all the children in the family had been suffering from whooping cough for six weeks. The jury returned a verdict in keeping with the medical testimony.
Butchers’ Cricket Club. — A well attended meeting of members of this club w r as held last evening at the Golden Fleece hotel, Mr F. Hubbard in the chair. It w T as resolved to start practice next Monday evening, at six o’clock. The following gentlemen were elected officers for the ensuing season ; Mr J. Mann, president; Mr F. Hopkins, vice-president; Mr T. Walker, captain ; Mr C. Deering, treasurer; Mr W. McGachie, secretary ; and Mr J. E. Ingle, custodian. Committee—Messrs D. Patrick, W. Lodge, J. Gray, S. Philphott, and S. Day. The Late Inspector Barshah. —Several gentlemen having interested themselves in the case of the wife and family of the late Mr Barsham, inspector of police for the Northern district, a meeting was held at the Resident Magistrate’s office, Kaiapoi, on Monday, at which about twenty were present. Mr C. Whitefoord, R.M., was voted to the chair. Mr J. Lowthian Wilson rvas appointed secretary, It was resolved that those present Messrs McKenna, V.C., J. Beharrell, S. S. Powell, J. H. Schmidt, C. Oram, J. Conway, W. Burnip, Dr. Ovenden, J. W. Ellen, R. Aherne, E. Parnham, B. Monk, E. Revell, J. C. Porter, C. Ff. Pemberton, G. P. Milsom, G. F. Hewlings, and H. J. Wood, with power to add to their number —be appointed a committee to provide a fund for the relief of Mrs Barsham and family. A large number of names were added in various districts of the province. It was decided that Mr J. W. Ellen, Mayor, should act as treasurer. Subscription lists -were ordered to be issued, to be closed on November 15th. It was resolved to report the circumstances of the case to the members of the General Assembly for the district. Arrangements were made to afford relief at once. A sum of £6O was subscribed in the room.
