INTERPROYINOIAL. Wellington, September 22. Mrs Mary Ann Truman and her daughter, Mary Leonard Mudgeway, were brought up at the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day, charged with child murder. After a great deal of evidence, the mother and daughter were committed for trial. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt here at 4.40 this afternoon. Dunedin, September 22. A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held to-day to consider the following telegram from Mr Vincent Pyke : —“ McLean doing his utmost in committee in House, lobby, Bellamy’s and Cabinet, to obstruct the Strath Taieri Railway. Have majority but McLean throws difficulties in the way of division. Can any influence be brought to bear.” The following resolution was carried : —“That the Chamber, having heard with great regret that the Hon. George McLean is using his influence ti prevent the construction of the Strath Taieri railway, resolve that members of the House of Representatives, including those who are members of the Government, be asked to use their utmost efforts to secure the immediate construction of the Strath Taieri line.” Mr John Cargill proposed, and Mr H. Driver seconded, “ That this Chamber, having learnt with regret and disgust that the Hon. George McLean is opposing the construction of the central Otago railway, desire to express the hope that other members will disregard his mischievous efforts.” This was withdrawn.
