[reuter’s special telegrams to the PRESS AGENCY.] T H E~WA R. Roumanians Unsuccessful. Turkish Reinforcements. Bombay, September 20. A Russian ofllcial despatch states that the Roumanians unsuccessfully attacked the Turkish redoubts on the 18th, Thirty thousand Turks, for the relief of Osman Pasha, hare arrived midway between Sophia and Plevna.
AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
[Per Ringarooma, via Bluff.] Melbourne, September 19. The Council having postponed the consideration of the Land Tax Bill till the 26th, the Assembly, on the motion of the Govern - ment, adjourned till the 27th. The Opposition objected to this course, but were overruled by a large majority. The Council has passed the Railway Con truction Bill, after material alteration. Colonel Ward has resigned as Deputy Master of the Mint. He will probably be succeeded by Colonel Schratchley. Sir Wm Jervois and Sir W. 0. Robinson are at present both in Melbourne. There is some prospect of t he Italian Opera Troupe visiting New Zealand. Two tine short horn bulls have been shipped for F. and S. Moorin, Dasseper Park, Auckland. A murder has been committed near Rushworth. One R!eJJy, r miner, coolly shot
Henry Parkinson, another miner, during some dispute about money matters. The Lusitania left here full of passengers and cargo. The ship Macduff on the passage out was run into by the ship Belfast, bound to India, and was also dismanted in a gale. The weather has been very hot and dry. There has been a copious rainfall in New South Wales and the Riverine district. An Equity suit Aarons v Lewis, with reference to a dispute over the Academy of Music has been commenced. Creswick is still drawing good houses. Business is dull.
INTERPROVINCIAL.
Graiiaaistoavn, September 24. Moananui, a well-known Thames chief, died at Parawai, early this morning. There will bo a great tangi. Deceased was the principal opponent to the opening of Ohinemuri. Thelffiail. Wellington, September 24. The Government have received advice by cable that the Zealandia left San Francisco on the 12th instant with the London mail of the 23rd of August. It is due at Auckland on October sth. The City of Sydney arrived on the 29th (? 20th) with the New Zealand August mail. A series of Roman Catholic mission services were commenced yesterday at St. Mary’s, by the Rev. Father Ilenneberry, a missionary who has been conducting mission services for the past tAventy-five years in California and on the Pacific coast. There are three services and sermons daily, and every Catholic in in Wellington is expected to attend without fail at least twice daily. Plenary indulgences are granted under certain conditions, such as for regular attendance at mission services, receiving Communion, Holy Eucharist, &c. The mission will last more than a week. No collections are made. At every service so far the church has been densely crowded, many coming very long distances.
