[SPECIAL MESSAGE to THE “SYDNEY HEKALD.”] Operations before Plevna. Sydney, September 21. The Russians made a general assault upon the Turkish position at Plevna on Tuesday, the Czar’s fete day. The storming columns attacked the northern and southern faces of the Great Gravitza redoubt. Three divisions attempted to take the Turkish trenches protecting Plevna, whilst General Skobeloif was operating against the redoubts, barring the entrance to Plevna by the Sophia road. The stormers advanced gallantly, but having no shelter, withered away under a deadly rifle fire from the Turks. The survivors were compelled to retire. Reinforcements shared the same fate, meeting failure and disaster everywhere. The E mperor returned to head quarters at Poredia, disappointed. During twilight the assault was renewed, and within an hour the Gravitza redoubt and three redoubts on the Sophia road were in possession of the Russians. On Wednesday the Turks made six fierce attacks upon the Russian left. In the last they recaptured three redoubts. Reinforcements reached General Skobeloff too late. Q-rayitza is still held by the Russians. The carnage on Tuesday and Wednesday was tremendous in the regular siege operations. A rear attack by Mehemet Ali and Sulieman Pasha is feared.
