PARLIAMENTARY.
Last Night’s Proceedings,
Wellington, September 22. In committee on the schedules to the Education Bill, Mr Bowen proposed to define the Auckland education district, omitting the Poverty Bay district, which it was intended to add to the Hawkes Bay district. Mr Sheehan protested against this, and moved “ That the boundaries be the same as the provincial districts.” Sir R. Douglas desired to see the district north of Auckland made a separate education district. Mr Gisborne thought the provincial district of Auckland should be divided into three education districts. Messrs Lusk, Rees and Hamlin supported Mr Sheehan’s proposal. Ultimately, after a long discussion, progress was reported without any decision being arrived at. The Friendly Societies Bill and Industrial and Provident Societies Bill were passed through committee and read a third time. The Himatango Crown Grants Bill was read a second time and referred to the Native Affairs Committee. On the District Railways Bill in committee, Mr Pyke strongly opposed the Bill, as not giving sufficient power to the County Councils. The clauses to 50 were passed with alterations indicated by Mr Ormond in moving the second reading and progress was reported, and the House rose at 1.10 a.m.
