FOOTBALL.
DUNEDIN v. TIMARU. [from: the correspondents of the press.] Timaru, August 20. The football match between Dunedin and Timaru was played to-day during a pouring southerly rain. In the first spell Timaru got a force-down, and kept the ball well in the Dunedin quarters. In the second spell Dunedin had the advantage, hut no points were scored. In the third spell Dunedin got a force-down, and during the final twenty minutes Dunedin got two touch-downs, equal to four points. Timaru had only a scratch team, winch had never played together before, and they showed up splendidly. The Dunedin men say that the contests at Temuka and Timaru were the hardest yet met with in the colony. The representative team left for home by steamer to-night.
