[PER press agency.]

The Roman Catholics and the Education Bill. Napier, August 24. A very large meeting of Roman Catholics was held Isist; night respecting the Education Bill. Resolutions were passed that the Bill would inllict great hardships on Catholics, who would be obliged to support their own schools to ensure the religious education of their children, and be compelled also to contribute to schools from which they would derive no benefit. It was also resolved that the Education Act in Hawke's Bay fully answers all requirements, and lias given general satisfaction, and that there is no reason why an Act similar in principle should not bo brought into force for the whole of the colony. Other resolutions related to Catholics being entitled to claim inspection of their schools, and also as to the reading the Bible and Lord's Prayer, the clause relating to which, the resolution said, should be expunged. The meeting was exceedingly well conducted, and the speakers were very moderate. Father Forrest was in the chair. Wellington, August 24. In the Supreme Court to-day Messrs Harper and Bell appeared in support of a rule to set aside the verdict obtained in the case of Harrison v Palmer, in which the jury found a verdict for the plaintiff for £6OO damages. The rule was sought upon the following grounds —That the Judge improperly allowed the plaintiff to amend the declaration, and misdirected the jury by not having directed them that the plaintiff had failed to establish a cause of action, and there was no evidence of any authority being given to Von Dadelzen, manager of the Bank at Poverty Bay, to make an agreement, and that the damages were excessive. The case was adjourned till next Tuesday. Messrs Trnvers and Chapman appeared for the defendants. Nelson, August 24.
