MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, August 23. (Before G. L. Mcllish, Esq., R.M.) Drunk and Disorderly. —Thomas Sheehan was charged with being drunk and resisting the police. It appeared that accused had been one of the unemployed who had been put on to work by the Corporation at the South Town Belt. Besides getting drunk he had abused the foreman, obstructed the other men employed on the works, and was exceedingly violent when arrested. Fined 40s and Is cabhire.
Assaults. —A case Elam Gilbert v Alex. Flemming was withdrawn on the application of Mr Garrick, who stated his intention of proceeding civilly in the matter. Bessy Graham and Tilly Livingston were charged on summons with having assaulted Kate Grant. Complainant stated that when coming from the Theatre each of the defendants struck her, and the girl Livingston threatened to knife her. Defendants admitted the offence, but said the reason why they had struck complainant was because she had called them very bad names. Fined 20s each.
