Grand National Steeplechase. —The following additional entry has been received for this eventMr John Andrew’s ch g Banjo, aged. The Unemployed. —BetAvcen seventy and eighty men commenced work this morning on the North and South belts, and arrangements have been made to employ more in the Domain, and send the single men to the country. Sunnyside Asylum. —Mr and Mrs Hooper (Miss Bessie Vivian) have kindly consented to giA T o a performance this evening at the Sunnyside Asylum to the patients and their friends. The programme will include “ A Pair of Pigeons” and “Aladdin,” in which Mr and Mrs Hooper will appear. Maori Inamsion oe Waitaki. —Under this heading the “ North Otago Times ” says: -—The Maoris arc now encamped about Jive miles from Omarama, in the middle of the lambing ground. As they were continually hunting “ wckas ” in every gully, and giving the ewes no rest, the manager laid siege round their encampment with eight thousand wethers, which had the desired effect of making their horses, about eighty in number, cross the Ahuriri on to Benmore—giving the neigh-bours-a turn. Fires at Waimate. —There appear to have recently been two narrow escapes from fire at Waimate. In one instance, the woodwork of the line of the steam-engine at Mr Bruce’s saw mills was discovered to be on fire, the' flames blazing up to the roof, but an alarm prevented the fire from spreading. In the other case, a house in High street, inhabited by a man named O’Korke, was found to be on fire, near where some sticks and shavings had been placed, but this fire was also promptly put out. Death by Choking. —A little boy two and a half years old, sou of Mr Webb, who resides in the Windmill road, died early yesterday morning at the Hospital. Ite had been brought in about noon the previous day with a piece of carrot; stuck in his throat. He was attended to by Drs Collins and Campbell, and it was found subsequently that an operation would have to be performed to remove the obstruction. This was done, and the child lingered f ill about 3 a.m. At the inquest ibis afternoon a verdict of “Accidental death” was returned. Diocesan Sunday'School Examination. —The report of the examiners for the prizes offered by the Diocesan education committee has been made. The number competing in both grades Avas 121, and the examiners Revs. E. G. Penny and J. W. Stack for the upper grade ; Bevs. F. A. Hare andT. Flavellfor the lower. The conditions were that those obtaining 300 marks and upwards should be placed in the first class, and those obtaining over 200 and up to 300 in the second. Of both grades one candidate only succeeded in obtaining a first class, and that in the upper grade. This was Master W. W. H. Smith, St. Michael’s school, whose papers are very highly spoken of. All the other candidates only succeeded in obtaining sufficient marks to entitle them to come into the second class. In all thirtysix prizes were awarded. L.0.L., No. 3, Canterbury True Blues.— The monthly meeting of the above was held in the Orange Hall on Tuesday last, it being the night for the election of officers during the next twelve months. There was a large attendance of members, also several brethren from sister lodges. After preliminaries, the lodge proceeded to the election of office bearers, which resulted as follows : —W.M., Bro. Prudhoe, re-elected ; D.M., Bro. Christie; Secretary, Bro. Tribe; Treasurer, Bro. J. C. MeWilliam ; Chaplin, Bro. J. Mohr; Committee, Bros. T. Cooper, J. Adams, T. Anderson, T. Adams, R. Moore ; Auditors, Bros. T. Adams, R. Moore. The lodge being closed in due form, the brethren adjourned for refreshment, when a very agreeable hour was spent, and all were much pleased with the night’s meeting.
