Times," August 2. COLLISION ATj SEA. Tjo' Kktch Qotver Kin Down off Pioeon Bay Hi THE S.S. TABAKAKI. Mr John Smith's ketch Quiver, William Smith, master was run down about a mile this side ot Pi'o-eonßav by the s.s. Taranaki between 6 and 7 £m e vesTerday. The ketch was in ballast, bound to Be Bon's Bay, and carried one man besides the master. It -appears that when the accident occurred the vessel was on the starboard tack, standing oil shore, the land being two miles distant. She was head reaching, and there was a light N.E. wind, just sufficient to make her steer Ihe night was a tine one but a little cloudy, and the men. who had just had supper, saw the steamer coming some distance off. The Taranaki was steering the usual .•rmv=<e for Port Chalmers, find was running m such awayas to make it likely that if a collision took place she would strike the Quiver on the quarter. The steamer coming on in this way, the men on the ketch thought that the side lights, which were both burning, might not be seen very distinctly and they therefore held up the red light, and waved it about, in order to attract the attention ot those onboard the Taranaki The steamer, however, came straight on and struck the ketch in the main riggmg on the port side, carrying away her mam mast and staving in her side. The injury inflicted was so severe that the vessel commenced sinking immediately. Captain Smith and the seaman, who is named D. Berry, tried to get into the dintrv which was towing astern, but they tailed; they then climbed into the lnizzen rigging, and were dragged aboard the Taranaki just as the Quiver went down under their teet, the vessel sinking within five minutes of the collision Ihe Taranaki steamed back and lauded the men at the outer pilot «Htion from which place they were seut on to Helton, in the pilot boat As a mutter of course the men have lost all thej had on board. The Quiver was, as before stated, owned by Mr Smith, of Le Bon's Bay, and was, we hear, insured for £2OO in the National. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Wellington, August 4.
