Sydenham Literary Clue.—At the usual weekly meeting of this club, held last evening, the adjourned debate on Mr Cass's paper on the form of the earth was resumed. At the close, a vote of thanks to Mr Cass was recorded. AsmnjßTON Ploughing Match. —The annual district match will take place at Mr Hay T. Smith's farm, on Friday, 17th instant. With the exception of the champion classes (single and double furrow) the other events are confined to the district. Spouting.—By an oversight in the telegraph department the nomination of Mr Logan's Cloth of Cold for the C.J.C. Handicap was not received until after the time of entry. The Jockey Club have, however, determined to accept it, and he will therefore be added to the list of entries. Captain Wheeler. —This popular commander has been suffering much lately from illness, and, his doctor having recommended a month's quiet, lie leaves the Hawea in charge of Captain Kennedy on her arrival in Kelson, and takes a spell at home, resuming his command at the expiration of a month. Meeting of Artizans. —In anticipation of the contemplated meeting of artizans, on the subject of importing manufactured articles which may be produced in the colony, a committee met last evening and drafted a series of resolutions to be submitted at the same. In effect they will be nearly the same as those which are to be proposed at the meeting to be held this evening in Dunedin.

Magisteetaiu—Mr Wardell, R.M. at the Wairarapa, has been appointed Resident Magistrate for Wellington during Mr Crawford's absence. A vacancy exists on the Bench of the Poverty Bay Resident Magistrate's Court, owing to the decease of Dr Nesbitt, late Resident Magistrate of that district. OuiTUAiiY. —The "New Zealand Times" notices the death of another respected colonist, namely, the wife of Mr Joseph Nancarrow. Mrs Nanearrow died on Monday, the 30th, at Wellington terrace, after a lingering illness. Her loss will be deeply felt by many.

Post Office Savings Banks.—ln the second quarter of 1870 the excess of withdrawals over deposits in these savings' banks was £BI3B. In the same quarter this year the excess of deposits over withdrawals was £4085. In the same quarter last year the number of accounts opened was 2960; this year 3010. The deposits for the three months last year amounted to £170,498 ; this year to £177,228.

Lodge Rainbow, 1.0.G-.T., Lyttelton.— The installation of officers for tho ensuing term in this lodge took place lust Thursday at the weekly meeting. Pro. Reed, lodge deputy, officiated, assisted by Grand Lodge officers, Pros. Ayers and Dimond. A number of members were inducted as officers, and, after several assisting officers and committees had been appointed, tho lodge was closed in the usual form.

G-aol Retukxs.—ln Lyttelton Gaol during the month of July there were 145 prisoners, all being on the male side. Ten of the number were debtors. Thirty of the total were discharged. In Addington Gaol there wire ninety-six prisoners, thirty of whom were females. Forty males and twelve females were discharged. In Timaru there were thirty-three, that number including only one female. Seven of the sixteen discharged were removed to Lyttelton G-aoLJ
