NEWS OF THE DAY
Bootmakers.—A meeting of the bootmakers of Christchurch is to be held tomorrow night, at eight o'clock, in the Forester's Hall. Addington Cricket Club.—A meeting of this Club will be held to-morrow night, at 7.30, in Feathers' Hotel. Woolston. All entertainment by the Christchurch Minstrels, will be given in the Oddfellows' Hall, Woolston, on Thursday night. Scandinavian Service.—The Eev J. S. Smalley will hold divine service in the Weslcyan Church, Durham street, on Sunday next, at 4 p.m. Curling.—During the late frosts some citizens of Dunedin have been enjoying themselves from daylight to dark, by engaging in the game of curling on a frozen pond, " winding up," as the papers say, " with the timehonored dinner of beef and greens." Concert at Prebbleton. —A concert, for the benefit of the church, was held in the schoolroom on Friday evening last. There was a large attendance. The Eev. De Berdt Hovell occupied the chair. The proceeds amounted to £l2. Appointments.—The following appointments have been made in the Deeds and Land Transfer offices here: —Mr Edward Denham lias been advanced to the District, Registrarship of Deeds, and Mr Andrew Pinwill, chief clerk, to the Deputy Eegistrarship. In the Land Transfer office, Mr Denliam, Deputy District Land Registrar, has also been appointed Assistant Land Registrar. Dangerous Railway Platform. —It is time that notice was taken of the platform on the Eyreton Railway, which abuts on to the Ohoka rood, near to Mr J. Wilson's mill. On more than one occasion accidents have happened to persons driving vehicles in consequence of the manner in which this platform is placed at the corner of a road. Lately a spring cart, driven by a lady, was capsized and its occupant was severely injured. This matter ought to have been taken notice of by the authorities long ago. ELLESMELtE AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL Association. —The meeting of the committee usually held after the Leeston sale lapsed on Friday last for want of a quorum. Several matters in counediou with the show were however discussed, and some alterations in the programme were recommended, amongst which was a special class for bull calves. The secretary stated that an offer had been made by Messrs H. Matson and Co. to contribute the sum of £5 5s towards a premium of fifty guineas to beawarded to " the best kept farm" in the Ellesmere district.
Likio Insurance. —A lecture on this subject was delivered List Thursday, by Mr Wiggins, in the schoolroom, Little River. Only very short notice was given, but a good number were present, and they listened with great interest to (he lecture. At the conclusion the lecturer was warmly applauded. Yaujhukst.—An entertainment was given in the schoolroom here on Friday evening last. The room was well filled, and the audience thoroughly enjoyed themselves, such a treat never having been given in the district. The fact of the entertainment being for the benefit of the library fund no doubt caused many to come from a distance, but it had intrinsic merit sufficient to encourage an attendance under any circumstances. Football. The boys of Leeston and Southbridge met for a friendly game in the playground attached to the Southbridge school, on Friday last. Mr Ford, master of the Leeston school, acted as umpire on behalf of the visitors, and Mr W. Little stood in the same capacity for the home boys. Play was commenced at 2 p.m., and after a short contest the Leeston boys gave in, not having obtained a single point to their opponents with a goal, which was cleverly kicked by Jos. Bunny.
