♦ [by submarine cable, pee press agency.] The Suez Mail at Adelaide. Russian Atrocitifs at Ardalian. Naval Engagement on the Peruvian Coast. Sydney, July 20. The Suez mail steamer arrived at Adelaide at midnight. She brings London dates to June Bth. There are no New Zealand passengers. She has brought news of an engagement off the Peruvian coast between the Eritish war ships Shah and Amethyst, and the turret ram Huica. The latter escaped after dark, but so damaged that she was forced to surrender to the Peruvian squadron. Her crew had joined the revolutionary President, and had committed piratical acts on Eritish subjects. A German surgeon, from Ardahan, reports that, after capturing the fortress, the Russians plundered every house, violated every woman, and set fire to the hospital, burning the wounded soldiers alive.

The barometer lias been falling from 30.4- at mid-day to 29.75 now (7 p.m.) No damage as been done as yet. New Plymouth, July 20. The body of King, drowned in the Mangcaeu river by the upsetting of a canoe, has been recovered. It could not be brought in, and was buried in the bush and the place fenced in.
