PRESBYTERY OF CHRISTCHURCH.

The Presbytery of Christchurch met, and was duly constituted with devotional exercises in St. Andrew’s Church schoolroom on July 12th. Sederunt —The Revs. Messrs Burnett (Moderator), Cree, McCallum, Douglas, Fraser, Hill, Mclntosh, Horner, Waddell, and McGregor (clerk). After the former minutes were confirmed, the certificates of the Rev Rutherford Waddell were read and received as satisfactory, and his name was engrossed on the list of preachers within the bounds. Mr Fraser proposed the motion, of which he gave notice at last meeting, “ That the charges for the future for Assembly, Synod, and Presbytery be levied upon congregations, in proportion to the amounts raised for maintenance fund from subscriptions, seat-rents and ordinary Sabbath collections, less allowance in lieu of manse where there is no manse.” Mr McGregor seconded pro forma. The motion was adopted. The Rev John Elmslie’s motion on theological training lapsed. The Rev. Mr McCallum stated that he had forwarded letters of condolence to Mr and Mrs McGowan. The report from commissioners to the Ashburton was read. The Rev. Mr Burnett slated that he received a cheque last week for £l2l. The Rev. Mr Fraser moved—“ That the Presbytery receive report, and record its satisfaction with the deputation.” Mr Douglas seconded. Agreed to. At this stage the Rev. Mr Hill was introduced to the brethren of the Presbytery. Mr Douglas gave notice of motion —“ That the Presbytery in accordance with the recommendation of the last General Assembly, consider the Assembly’s sustentation fund scheme at its next meeting.” Mr Fraser gave notice of motion —“ That a committee of Presbytery be appointed to take into consideration the remit from the General Assembly touching the establishment of a theological hall and interim temporary provision for the instruction of divinity students, and especially to devise means for the permanent endowment of theological professorships and scholarships at Christchurch.” The meeting was closed with the benediction.
