The Zealandia arrived this morning with the English and American mails. She left San Francisco on the 23rd, Californian time ; omitted Kaudavan. - Passengers for New Zealand—Messrs 11. A. Duff, E. Graham, C. IT. Lenaner, O’Neill, Allen, Mrs Murdoch, and 9 in steerage.

Disgraceful Scene. Dunedin, June 16,

A pugilistic encounter took place at a meeting of the St. Kilda Council last night, between auditor Eager and Councillor Halligan. A number of ratepayers formed a ring and acted the part of lookers on, until both combatants were severely punished, when the fight was stopped. A gas explosion took place in the Glasgow pic house yesterday, about £SO worth of damage was done. A young man named Wilson was badly burned. Wellington, June 16.

The certificate of Captain Bonner of tho steamer Tui has been suspended for six months, and ho has. been ordered to pay costs. The charge of drunkenness was not proved, but gross misconduct was shown in taking the Manawatabar when signalled not to do so, and for steaming round the Napier and thereby causing a collision. Wanganui, June 16.

The natives have turned back a part of the Government surveyors on a block of native land at Marimotu and taken away the chains and instruments and have struck tho tents. The surveyors are now on their way back to Wanganui.

Tho Government policy is much the same as that of the last Berry Ministry. The retention of the protective duties and the imposition of a land tax are its prominent features. There arc to be changes in the constitution of the Legislative Council next session. The Attorney-General will probably hold a seat in Parliament.

The burglars who broke into Goldsteins’, jewellers, have not yet been arrested. The property taken was valued at £I6OO. Messrs McMeckan, Blackwood, and Co. are building two new boats on the Clyde to steam 18 knots.

The weather is very warm and mild. Five or six places of amusement are open, but none are doing very well.
