NEWS OF THE DAY

Gaiety Theatre. —Clifford's Mirror of the World was fairly patronised last evening, and the views were highly appreciated. There will be another exhibition this evening, and a mid-day one to-rnorrow. Canterbury College.—-The ceremony of opening the new building of the Canterbury College by his Excellency the Governor took place yesterday. The conversazione in the evening was exceedingly successful. During the evening the electric light was shown from the tower of the Museum and flooded part of Cathedral square with light. CiißisTcnriiCH Poultry Show.—The annual show of the Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Society was opened last evening at the Skating Rink, and was largely attended. The exhibition is a very great success, the game, Spanish, pigeon, and canary classes being especially fine. The Georgias.—These gentlemen, who possess the advantage over other Minstrel Troupes of not having to "make up" for their performance, will open at the Theatre on Monday evening next. Mr Bligh, the in advance, arrived on Wednesday from the 2s T orth to make the necessary preliminary arrangements, and the Minstrels themselves will put in an appearance by the next North boat on Sunday. Railway Tuik-Taule. —AVe acknowledge the receipt of Tombs's A. B. C. Railway Time-table. It is very neatly got up, and in a convenient form gives all necessary information regarding the arrival and departure of trains at all the stations on the Lyttelton and Christchurch line, and on the line from Amberley to Port MoerakiinOtago; as well as atthestations on the various branches. The publication should prove a great convenience to the travelling public, and ought to secure a large sale. Pigeon Flying- Race.—This race was won by Mr Gr. A. Maequrrie's Larry Doolan, the bird doing the distance from Timaru in 3h. 3m. 355, Mr Donohue's The Quail coming in second with 3h. 4m. All the birds (with the exception of three, which must have taken a 11 y on their own accord and did not turn up at all) flew together, but some little difficulty was experienced in trapping some of them. (Duly liu. 28s. was the difference between the lirst and last bird when brought in. Horses. —By the steamer Taupo yesterday there arrived ten draught mares and geldings. They were brought up by Mr E. Dixon and were consigned to Mr Trestrail. They are a fine lot of horses, much superior to the ordinary shipments of draught stock.

Football. —The return match, North v | South of Cashel street, will take place on the Christenurch football ground on Saturday, the former wearing red and black, and the latter blue and white. Play to commence at 2.45 p.m. sharp. A match was played yesterday between the Normal School Club and the Earnley Academy Club. Akt Exhibition. —As will be seen elsewhere, the art exhibition at the Museum buildings will be open on Saturday from noon till 4, and from 6 p.m. till 10 p.m.; and on Sunday from 1.30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m.; and from Monday, the 11th, till Saturday, the 16th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Professor Von. Haast, the superintendent of the art exhibition, wishes us to say that it will be difficult to issue tickets for all sticks and umbrellas at the door. He therefore requests the public to abstain from bringing any, as nobody will be allowed to enter the rooms with them.

PAPANUI. —A meeting of the school committee was held on Wednesday evening. _ The report of the inspector, which was most satisfactory, was read. A discussion ensued relative to the overdraft at the Bank which the Board of Education had not paid off, and also as to the chairman's inability to sign any more cheques, in consequence of the Board of Education having vetoed paying any interest on overdrawn accounts. The committee then resigned. Appended is copy of letter to the Board of Education :—" Papanui, June 7th. Sir,—l have the honor to inform you that at a meeting of the committee held last evening in consequence of no funds being available for paying present demands, and the overdraft at the Bank being still unpaid, the committee have resigned. Yours, &c., Wit. Muneo, Chairman."

Lyttelton Colonists' Society —The monthly committee meeting was held on Wednesday evening last, the president (Mr 11. N. Nalder) in the chair. Correspondence was read from the Borough Council regarding insufficient means of egress from the Colonists' Hall in case of fire or panic. It was resolved that a sub-committee, consisting of the vicepresident, MrH. E. Webb, and Dr McDonald should be appointed to draw up a report on the matter. A letter was read from Mr Boddington regretting his inability to attend. The president reported that the window in the library had been put in, and the dressing room .boarded. The treasurer reported that the total receipts for the month were £l9 17s Gd. Accounts were passed amounting to £3l •Is 7s. It was resolved—" That the library committee make out a list of £2O worth of books to be sent"for by the outgoing mail." After some further business the meeting adjourned.
