WAIMATE STEEPLECHASE.
[bx telegram, from the correspondent of the press.] Timaru, June 6. Stewards Messrs Elworthy, Geo. Lovegrove, Frank Slee, Richard Wills, Dennis Daneen, G. B. Parker, P. J. Kimbal, G. R. Freeman, E. H. Martelli, John Martin. Judge—M. Studhohne, Esq. Starter —P. Campbell, Esq. Handicappers—M. Studhohne, Esq., and G. Stead, Esq. Clerk of the scales—M. Mitton, Esq. Clerk of the course—E. H. Cameron, Esq. The Waimate races came off to-day. There was splendid weather, and over a thousand persons were on the course. Waimate Steeplechase Ctjp, of .£75 ; entrance, £5, added ; distance, two and a half miles. Four weighed out. Will-ifT-Can refused the trial jump, and kept tin: field waiting fully an hour. Tommy Dodd in his canter got his hind legs between the rails and went stiff. The race was not up to much, Banjo winning as he liked; Brunette second. Tommy got away from his rider, and Will-if-I-Can pulled up. Maiden Plate, of .£SO ; entrance, £5, added; distance, two miles. Five started. All came to the post and rail opposite the stand together. Lone Hand baulked, causing Grey Momus to go sideways on the rails, throwing Lunn heavily, who quickly remounted, amid great applause. After that it was a succession of baulks and falls, Brunette winning easily, Momus second. Waimate Steeplechase Handicap, of ,£100; nominations, £2, to go to the fund ; acceptances, £2,, added ; distance, three miles. Banjo, 12st 71b ; Lottery, lOst 121 b ; Brunette, lOst 71b; Well-if-I-Can, lOst 41b. Tommy, list 41b, was a non-acceptor. Banjo and Brunette started with the lead for half way, Will-if-I-Cau then went to the front, and at the last time of the water jump had the race in hand, but bolted in the direction of his stable. Banjo then cantered in, Brunette second. Lottery threw his rider first time round, and went over several jumps, including the water by himself. Consolation Handicap, of <£10: nominations, £1; acceptances, £'6, added; distance, two miles. This race was won by Tommy Dodd, beating a field of four. Kelly, the rider of Jack, lam afraid, is seriously hurt by the horse falling.
