INTERPROVINCIAL. [pee peess agency.] The New Native Lands Act. Auckland, June 1. During the recent visit of the AttorneyGeneral the New Native Lands Bill was finally settled. Mr Whitaker's proposals were accepted nearly without objection. The Act of 1873 is to be repealed altogether, and the general scheme is to return to the policy of 1865, with amendments suggested by experience. The Government are to evacuate the land market and leave speculation to the public. Certificates are to be issued to owners, and they may sell or lease to whom they please at'once.' Mortgages arc forbidden. The general idea of the Bill is absolute freedom to the Maori in territorial rights, and absolute freedom of laud from Government interference. A woman, named Elizabeth Mortimer, dropped down dead suddenly last night. At an inquest to-day a verdict of " Accidental death " was returned. The Wave, brig, from Newcastle to Oarnaru, arrived last night, and proceeded on to destination this morning. Dunedin, June 1. Mrs Duncan Beath, a well-known Lawrence resident, died suddenly. The Taieri County Council have decided to lavy no rate, and by a majority agreed to discontinue levying tolls throughout the county. The Council also carried a series of resolutions regarding the interior railway, affirming that Strath Taieri is the best route; that failing its construction by the Government, power be given to the county to construct it up to its boundary; the opinion of the Maniototo Council thereupon to be invited. At the City Court this morning one Archibald Smith was fined 40s for kissing one Miss Andrews. The defendant's plea was that he did it for a lark. Four sets of competitive designs for the new Town Hall were received to-day—one from Strouts, of Christchurch; one from Auckland, and two from Dunedin, Lawson and Petrie. Three sets are on the way from Melbourne. A public meeting on the Gaol chaplaincy question is to held next week.
