Dunedin, May 31. The Horticultural Society is about to cease in consequence of the falling off in members and the want of public support. It was resolved, at a meeting of the Education Board yesterday, that for students in training at the University classes a professor's certificate of being classed in English, Latin, and Mathematics, should be accepted, in lieu of the inspector's examination in these subjects. GRAHAMSTOWN, May 31. The Rev. Mr Hill, who is leaving for Lyttelton, has been entertained at a banquet by the members of the Masonic Lodges. A valuable Past-Master's Jewel was presented to him by the Sir Walter Scott- Lodge, of which Mr Hill was R.W.M. for two years, A public subscription for a testimonial is being raised. Jervois and Colonel Scratchley to visit New Zealand, to report on the harbor defences. These officers may therefore shortly be expected in Wellington.
