Considerable dissatisfaction prevails amongst the Highway Boards, in consequence of the non-payment of subsidies by the G-eneral Grovernment. On the Great North road, a bridge, between East and West Waitakerci, has been washed away, entirely stopping traffic. The settlers suffer serious inconvenience and loss. The Eden County Council called a private meeting of members to-day to form a dim illation to the Hon. Mr Whitaker as to subsidies. The Council has voted away the expected subsidy, and has no money to pay working expenses, the Act haying been hung up. A special meeting of the South British Insurance shareholders is to be held in July to consider the subject of increasing the capital by 12,500 shares at 30 shillings premium, to be offered to shareholders at the rate of one new for three present shares, making the total shares 50,000, the subscribed capital £IOO,OOO, the paid up capital £IOO,OOO, tire reserve fund £58,750, and to alter the rule preventing a dividend of more than ten per rent per annum premiums; the sale of the new issue to be added to the reserve fund. Wellington, May 29. The City Council to-day, after a long discussion as to the wharf tenders, resolved that the tender of McKirdy, Wellington, should be accepted. The Council also resolved to give three months’ notice to the engineer and some other officials, and to advertise for an engineer at a salary of £SOO. Dunedin, May 29. A young woman of respectable appearance, named Mary Carr, was committed for trial (his morning for stealing a large quantity of jewellery. [PKO.M A CORRESPONDENT OF THE PRELS-] Wellington, May 29. The City Council’s resolution to accept Mi McKirdy’s tender for the wharf extensioi works was carried by the casting vote of the Mayor, and on the ground that the tender was the lowest for the whole work.
