The City Council last night met lo consider the gas question, and resolved that havinghoard the engineer’s report, he be requested to use every means to remedy the defects in the gas supplied. Messrs Proudfoot and Mac Kay’s tender for £IO,OOO lias been accepted for the Balclutha railway contract. Patrick Walsh, dairyman, was killed at Pine Hill yesterday through falling off a tree. Davenports Successfully Tied. Auckland, May 30. The Davenports were successfully tied last night. On entering the cabinet the Mayor and Mr Hesketh, who were appointed a committee, and tied both Brothers with a tomfool’s knot. The Brothers objected that they were too tightly tied. Dr. Hooper was then called on the stage, and said the tying was not too hard. lie could put his linger between the rope and the skin. The Davenports insisted upon being unloosed amid the howling of the audience. hay offered to go in the cabinet and get the same gentlemen to tic him. The audience would not consent, and demanded that the Davenports should confess themselves beaten, and apologise. The Brothers retired from the stage amidst howls, and that part of the entertainment was abandoned. Davis and Fay successfully continued. They to-day announce their withdrawal from the Davenports, and travel on their own account. The knot which fixed the Davenports is a double noose, retied between the hands like handcuffs. The Kate McGregor is ashore at Waikato heads. Ho lives were lost.
The inquiry into the wreck of the Feronia closed yesterday. The decision is not known. The vessel is insured for £IOOO in the Hew Zealand Insurance, and £BOO in the South British.
