THE QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY, AKAROA
The loyalty of the inhabitants of Akaroa was evinced on Thursday by the usual display of bunting, a steeplechase, and a rifle match. Contrary to established custom, the Akaroa Volunteer Artillery this year did not assemble at noon to fire a fen de jole in honor of Her Majesty's birthday, but some members of the corps spent part of the day at the butts, where a match was fired off. The great attraction of the day was a steeplechase, which took place at German Bay, and which was largely attended, between 800 and 400 persons being on the ground. The meeting was held on Mr Inman's run, the popular and hospitable owner having kindly placed his paddocks at the disposal of the committee. The ground run over woidd, with a little trouble and expense, make a very fair steeplechase course; but, owing to want of preparation, the ground was rough, and the jumps not hard to negotiate. The following was the programme: — Mathhn Steeplechase of £ls. Twice round the course; weight for age. Entrance, 30s, Mr B. Shadbolt's, jun. ch g Faugh-a-Ballagh, 5 yrs, lOst 51b ... (Owner) 1 Mr C.
