BOARD OF HEALTH

Monday, May 28. A meeting of the Board of Health was held at noon. Present —Messrs Hobbs (chairman), Duncan, Tancrcd, Harmau, Hall, Jones, and Ross. inspector's report. The report of the inspector was read and discussed. He reported that he had inspected the premises of Mr D. Cant, and also several other premises. The report as a whole was adopted. AVONSIDE. A letter was road from the Heathcotc Road Board, calling attention to a nuisance existing at the Retreat, Avonside. The matter was referred to the inspector. CANDLE FACTORY. A report was read from the medical officer of the Board of Health, stating that he had inspected the candle works of Mr King, at Addington, and found that no offensive odour prevailed at the time he visited the works. There was no provision for drainage. After some discussion, it was resolved to allow the matter to stand over till next meeting, in order to see the effect of the improvements proposed in Mr Hancock's works. SOUTH DRAIN. A letter was read from the Medical Officer of Health, stating that he had inspected a house where typhoid fever had been reported, and found a cesspit in close proximity to the house, and running over into the South drain. It was resolved that the matter be referred to the City Council, with a request that their Inspector would take means, in conjunction with the Medical Officer of Health, to have the pits along the drain filled up and deodorised. The Council were also requested to enforce the pan system in the suburbs at once. STAGNANT WATER. Mr Hall drew the attention of the Board to a nuisance existing on the property of Mr W. Wilson, Ferry road. A stagnant pool of water had existed there for some time, and complaints had been made about it. The Inspector said that he had inspected the locality, and could not see that the water was a nuisance. On the contrary, the storm water was carried off. The Inspector was requested to report from time to time on the matter. It was resolved to give notice to proprietors of land on the Ferry road to drain the same. The Board then adjourned until Monday week.
