[per press agency.] Auckland, May 25. St. Leger Stakes. Hippocampus, 1; Aerolite, 2. Fi/viN'G SI'AKKS. —Transit Venus, 1 ; Uonglaiuls, 2 ; Daybreak, 3.
[from a correspondent of the press;.] The course was fearfully heavy. In the race for the St. Leger Stakes, Aerolite only started to save the added money. For the Flying Stakes six started. Venus Transit, 2 yrs, with 6st 21bs, was first; Lonsrlands, with Gst 51bs ; second. The race was won cleverly by half a length. Time —lmin, 28secs.
In the Steeplechase, Perfume, carrying list lQlbs, [was first; Butcher Boy, carrying 12st, second. Six started. The race was won easily. Butcher Boy broke his .stirrup-irons at (lie second i'enec. No other horse passed the post, In the Autumn Handicap, Hippocampus, carrying 7st 131bs, was first; Bidc-a-wee, Bst, second ; Ariel, 9st, third. The race was won cleverly by half a length. Time, 3min, In the Soiling r-acc, Izaak Walton, Bst 71bs, was first; Shauecii, 7.;t Blbs, second. Won
easily. For the Consolation Stakes two started, Shancen, carrying 7st 71hs, was first; Medea, Bst, second.
OAMARU CLUB STEEPLECHASE
[prom a correspondent of the press.] Oamaru, May 25. The annual steeplechase of the Oamaru Club was held yesterday. There was a fair attendance. The course was very heavy in eoiioCpuuco of the recent wet weather.
Maiden Plate of 40 sovs; two mile Mr Lunn's GreyMomus Mr Vinmg's Will-i M-can Mr Hoskins' Brunette ... Nevis also started.
After a well contested race Mourns j, r ot ahead a quarter of a mile from home, and won by three lengths. Brunette was a good third,
Waitaki County Cup, of 50 sovs.; two and half miles ; weight for age. Mr Swanson's Tommy Dodd 1 Mr R. Ray's Lottery •■• 2 These were the only starters, and Tommy, although he fell once at the water jump, won c isily. Hack Selling} Race, of 20 sovs.
Mr McKay's Bob Apples . 1 Bushman, Miss Tatton, and Mervunae, also started. .... This, was a grand race, old Bob winning by sheer gameness from Merriniac. The others were nowhere.
Oamaku Steeplechase Handicap, of 70 sovs.
Mr Swanson' s Tommy Dodd 1 Banjo and Grey Momus also started. Banjo and Momus took the lead at the start and kept together over the first_ three jumps. In jumping a gorse hedge, a stiff jump, Momus wanted to baulk, but his rider forced him over in a slanting direction. Banjo and he collided, and the two fell over the fence together. Banjo got away from McKay, and was never after in it. Momus lay on his rider (Simpson), and people had to lift him off. Tommy Dodd took all his leaps in fine style, and, although Momus was remounted, he could not be got over the fence, and Tommy cantered in alone. Consolation Handicap of 30 sovs.; two miles. MrVining's Will-If-I-Can 1 Banjo - Brunette ... ... ... ••• ••• ••• 3 These only started. Banjo and Will-If-I-Can took the lead and jumped splendidly together till half a mile from home. Banjo then showed up, and Will-If-I-Can won comparatively easily by three lengths.
